L'Algeria ha una storia complicata: dopo una colonizzazione più che centenaria e una lunga lotta di liberazione nazionale, è passata attraverso il monopolio del partito unico, il multipartitismo e la vittoria di un ra... more abstractL'Algeria ha una storia complicata: dopo una colonizzazione più che centenaria e una lunga lotta di liberazione nazionale, è passata attraverso il monopolio del partito unico, il multipartitismo e la vittoria di un raggruppamento politico su base religiosa, il radicalismo islamico e la guerra civile. La sua complessa e frammentata società è stata spesso letta attraverso le istituzioni o il movimento nazionale. Studiare i gruppi minoritari, in uno spazio presentato come esclusivamente arabo, risulta quindi particolarmente interessante. I berberi, minoranza linguistica e culturale, nonostante la loro incidenza, sono stati volutamente dimenticati nella narrazione della storia algerina e solo recentemente sono diventati oggetto di studio. Il libro intende contribuire al dibattito storico sulla costruzione dello Stato, ponendo l'accento sull'identità, il dissenso e l'opposizione politica. Se dal 2011 si parla con assiduità di primavere arabe, l'Algeria rappresenta un caso emblematico: la prospettiva - propugnata dal movimento berberista - di una "Algeria algerina" rispetto a quella di una Algeria "arabo-islamica" ha tuttora un'attualità valida ben oltre la realtà maghrebina.

Relations between Tunisia and Israel (and more generally between Israel and the Arab world) have also influenced internal relations within Tunisia and the reactions and decisions of its Jewish community. This paper describes the evolution of the Tunisian government’s attitudes towards Israel and the Palestinian issue in the post-independence era until the approval of the new Tunisian Constitution in 2014. The debate over whether to include an article regarding ‘the criminalisation of normalisation with Israel’ in the recently approved Constitution was considerable. Issues related to Israel have thus gained prominence in national debate, following a period in which they were primarily discussed by Ben Ali’s political opponents. Through an analysis of articles, books, Internet sources and presidential speeches, this article examines the different positions taken by Tunisia towards Israel and how they have evolved over time.

Between the 1940s and the 1950s, a crucial period of change for Algerian nationalism and state formation, Berber activists within the anti-colonial nationalist movement challenged the political line of the nationalist... more abstractBetween the 1940s and the 1950s, a crucial period of change for Algerian nationalism and state formation, Berber activists within the anti-colonial nationalist movement challenged the political line of the nationalist party, the Mouvement pour le Triomphe des Libertés Démocratiques. This opposition focused on the need to redefine the concept of identity: activists did not reject either Arabic or Islam — the dual linguistic-religious core of national identity for Algerian nationalists — but they identified with a broader idea of an ‘Algerian Algeria’ that could incorporate various components of society. Through the study of archival sources, this paper analyses the origins and consequences of the 1949 controversy within Algerian nationalism known as the ‘Berberist crisis’. Particular attention is paid to the idea of the nation proposed, assessing whether and how Berber activists participated in the political debate and state-building.

Beyond this official identity, howeve... more abstractAt the time of its independence in 1956, Morocco proclaimed itself an Islamic state, made Arabic its official language and pronounced the official definition of Moroccan identity. Beyond this official identity, however, for several decades a cultural movement aiming to rehabilitate the Amazigh language and culture fostered a debate about the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity. The Amazigh movement found a way to express itself through various associations, papers and memoranda, and it evolved from attempting to defend its heritage to legitimising its claims on the basis of human rights and asking that the Amazigh language be formally recognised. This essay reconstructs, on the one hand, the history of this cultural movement and, on the other, the attitude of the monarchy towards Amazighité between independence and the Constitution of 2011, which for the first time recognised Amazigh as an official language.

In questo spazio, infatti, le sedimentazioni di memoria sono il frutto di una relazione continua tra le diverse componenti che lo compongono e del diverso carattere che esse assumono attraverso il tempo. Si potrebbe, addirittura, immaginare che l'identità del Mediterraneo stia nella memoria di tutti gli incontri che nel succedersi dei secoli in esso si sono generati, che la sua unità sia nella pluralità dei rapporti che si sono sviluppati e degli attori che, volta a volta, vi hanno preso parte. Il contrario, insomma, di quello che oggi si è disposti a cercare, che gli storici assai spesso finiscono col cercare, quando si parla di identità: una ossessione di singolarità, una tenace ricerca di ciò che rimane perennemente eguale perché non è mai cambiato, e non di ciò che è sempre eguale – come accade in quello straordinario testo della classicità mediterranea che sono le Metamorfosi – perché muta continuamente. Bien que la Suisse ne puisse pas être considérée comme une puissance coloniale, les Suisses ont participé à la colonisation et, lors de l’indépendance des pays colonisés, la Confédération a été confrontée à de nombreuses questions concernant leur retour : assistance à fournir, biens à protéger, rémunérations et pensions. Le but de cette recherche est de focaliser l’attention sur l’analyse: - des changements au sein du tissu social et associatif en Suisse après le processus de décolonisation et au moment où émerge la nécessité de récupérer la valeur des prétendus “bien vacants”; - de l’action, des initiatives et des stratégies opérationnelles mises en place par l’ASSAOM; - des premières formes de collaboration unitaire entre les associations européennes de migrants d’outre-mer et des répercussions au niveau national et international. La recherche est donc menée sur trois niveaux : national (étude du rapport entre le gouvernement suisse avec ses communautés), européen (étude du réseau de la Confédération européenne des spoliés d'outre-mer) et extra-européen (analyse des rapports économiques et politiques avec l’Algérie ainsi que le débat international sur les réfugiés et les exilés).

Nonostante la Svizzera non possa essere definita una potenza coloniale, gli svizzeri hanno preso parte alla colonizzazione: gli emigrati sono diventati coloni e proprietari terrieri, hanno dato avvio a imprese commerciali e industriali, hanno vissuto per più generazioni all’estero creando la cosiddetta comunità des Suisse à l’étranger. Di conseguenza, sono stati toccati in modo diretto dal processo di decolonizzazione. Al momento dell’indipendenza dei paesi colonizzati, infatti, la Confederazione elvetica ha dovuto confrontarsi con i numerosi interrogativi riguardanti il rimpatrio, l’assistenza da fornire, i beni da salvaguardare, gli indennizzi e le pensioni. L’origine dell’importante colonia svizzera in Algeria risale all’inizio della presenza francese (1830-1840). Negli anni 1950, prima della guerra di liberazione nazionale, l’Algeria è il secondo paese d’Africa in cui vive il più alto numero di svizzeri e nel 1954, anno dello scoppio della guerra, conta più di 2000 persone, costituendo una delle più grandi colonie svizzere d’Africa. L’ASSAOM rappresenta un case study emblematico, cui si legano temi quali sicurezza sociale, reinserimento economico e politico, migrazione, tutti all’ordine del giorno nell’agenda politica svizzera ed europea.

Les repères identitaires et culturels des populations du Maghreb et du Sahara sont un objet essentiel de la reconfiguration en cours ou à venir dans ces régions, mais aussi en diaspora.
